We've been working on our environmental impact since 2016

Since 2016, Sammontana has been constantly monitoring some of our flagship products in order to gain a more thorough understanding of the potential effect our choices have on the environment, and we have taken steps to develop new solutions to help make a positive impact.

Over the years we have carried out Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) on products in our Barattolino, Fruttiamo, Amando and Grancroissant ranges, and these have been done with the assistance of researchers at Spinlife, a spinoff of the University of Padua. The process included LCA studies relating to the emission of greenhouse gas, the most important phenomenon in terms of environmental impact in the agri-food sector.

In 2020, we implemented evaluation models that conform with the European PEF methodology (Product Environmental Footprint), established as part of the Magis project which supports the Made Green in Italy initiative promoted by the Ministry for the Environment.

OUR RESULTS IN TERMS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The concrete actions we took in 2020 and 2021 in the form of new packaging and adjustments to our recipes for the Barattolino range alone lead to a 13% reduction in CO2e emissions.

QUANTIFYING OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Over the years, Sammontana has conducted LCAs on our core ice cream lines to understand the level of emissions for each. We have then systematically worked to offset them through global, VCS-certified (Verified Carbon Standard) projects, including a wind farm in Rajasthan, India and a reforestation initiative in Uruguay.

THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

At Sammontana, we understand that if we really want to pursue a sustainable path, we need to adopt circular economy models in a scientific, structured and rigorous manner. As such, we have embraced the model developed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation for the technical cycle and entrusted the biological cycle to Spinlife, a spinoff of the University of Padua, and so we are able to evaluate the circularity of our processes in our gelato division.

GREEN PACKAGING

Year on year, we work on new solutions with the aim

of

reducing the impact of our packaging on the environment, by ensuring it can be recycled or broken down at its end of life. We also work to raise consumer awareness, helping them understand the benefits of sorting their waste correctly.

IMPROVING NUTRITIONAL STANDARDS

At Sammontana we pay particular attention to our products' nutritional values, constantly seeking to improve the quality of the ingredients that go into our ice cream, frozen treats and croissants, so that they not only taste good but meet the highest standards.
